Tommy Edman Stars As $476 Million Dodgers Survive Scare Against $69 Million Marlins
The $476 million Los Angeles Dodgers faced the $69 million Miami Marlins in what’s believed to be the biggest payroll gap in baseball history, and barely survived. Thanks to Tommy Edman’s walk-off single, the Dodgers pulled off a dramatic 7-6 win in extra innings on Monday night at Dodger Stadium to lead the series.
Dodgers Squander Big Early Lead
The Dodgers started strong and looked ready to cruise. Shohei Ohtani scored the first run after Freddie Freeman’s line-drive single in the first inning, and Mookie Betts added another RBI single in the third to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, Miguel Rojas doubled to bring home Andy Pages, pushing the lead to 3-0. Then in the fifth, Teoscar Hernandez crushed his third home run in as many games, stretching the lead to 5-0. Everything was going according to plan for the big-spending Dodgers — until the Marlins punched back.

In the sixth inning, after an RBI single got Miami on the board, pinch-hitter Dane Myers crushed a grand slam to center field, tying the game at 5-5.
The Dodgers’ bullpen, especially Anthony Banda, suddenly found themselves under heavy pressure.
The Marlins grabbed a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th when Jesus Sanchez doubled home a run.
But the Dodgers answered in the bottom half. Tommy Edman, who had the day off, stepped up off the bench and delivered a two-run single to right field to seal the win.

Despite the huge payroll advantage, the Dodgers needed late heroics to avoid what would have been an embarrassing upset.
The reigning World Series champions will face the Marlins on Wednesday for the second game of the series at Dodger Stadium.
