Suns Coach Candidate: Who Could Phoenix Target To Replace Fired Mike Budenholzer?

The Phoenix Suns made headlines on Monday by firing head coach Mike Budenholzer, as first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move didn’t come as a total shock, but it’s still another major shake-up for a franchise that’s seen plenty since Mat Ishbia took over as owner.

Budenholzer becomes the third Suns head coach to be shown the door in just over two seasons under Ishbia. After entering the year with championship hopes, Phoenix fell flat with a 36-46 record, missing both the playoffs and the Play-In tournament. It marks the third straight year the Suns have taken a step back, and now, they are back in the market for a new head coach.

Budenholzer is also the third high-profile coach to lose his job in the past month, joining Taylor Jenkins in Memphis and Michael Malone in Denver. With three proven names now available, the Suns will have options.

So, who might Phoenix target next? Let’s look at a few logical possibilities.

Taylor Jenkins

Jenkins may be the most underrated name on the market. He’s the winningest coach in Grizzlies history, passing Lionel Hollins just this past November. He led Memphis to multiple playoff runs, coached Ja Morant’s rise, and helped build the team’s identity.

But a post-All-Star break collapse this year, mixed with key injuries, led to a surprising firing. His career record of 250-214 shows consistency, and he’s known for building strong locker room chemistry. If Phoenix wants a young, modern coach who values player development and defense, Jenkins could be a great fit.

Michael Malone

Michael Malone would be a headline hire. Just two years ago, he led the Denver Nuggets to an NBA championship, and he’s the winningest coach in franchise history. He made the postseason six straight years and helped guide Nikola Jokic into a three-time MVP.

Malone’s firing last week stunned the league. If he’s open to jumping back in right away, Phoenix should absolutely be on the phone. He brings playoff experience, a steady presence, and knows how to manage stars, something the Suns need with Durant, Booker, and Beal on the roster.

Mike Brown

If the Suns want toughness and accountability, Mike Brown checks those boxes. He’s a veteran coach with playoff pedigree, and even though the Kings let him go midseason, his impact in Sacramento was clear. Brown had a .549 win percentage, and his teams typically play smart, physical basketball, especially on defense.

Since he left, the Kings have plummeted defensively, especially when it comes to guarding the 3-point line. Brown isn’t flashy, but he’s a teacher, and with the Suns’ defensive issues, that might be exactly what they need.
