Carlos Rodon’s Home Run Problem Worsens as Yankees Rotation Continues to Struggle

Another start, another rough outing for Carlos Rodon.

The Yankees lefty was on the mound Sunday against the San Francisco Giants and once again couldn’t keep the ball in the park.

Rodon gave up a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning to Jung Hoo Lee — his second of the game — and was pulled right after, with the Giants taking a 4-3 lead.

Rodon pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 3 hits, 4 earned runs, and 3 walks while striking out 8 batters. He threw 100 pitches in total, 62 of them for strikes. While the strikeout numbers were solid, the story once again was the long ball.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Rodón has given up 36 home runs — the most in MLB during that span. In fact, he’s now allowed 51 homers in his first 50 games as a Yankee, tying J.A. Happ for the most in franchise history for a player’s first 50 outings.

For a team with championship aspirations, that’s a big problem.

Rotation Woes All Around

Rodon isn’t the only one struggling. Through 13 games this season, the Yankees’ rotation has looked shaky outside of ace Max Fried, who holds a sparkling 1.56 ERA.

Here’s the rest of the group:

Carlos Rodon: 5.19 ERA

Marcus Stroman: 11.57 ERA

Carlos Carrasco: 7.71 ERA

Will Warren: 6.00 ERA

That’s not going to cut it in a loaded AL East.

Rodon, who was brought in as a major piece of the rotation, simply hasn’t delivered consistently. He’s missing bats — the 8 strikeouts are a good sign — but the home run issue keeps killing momentum.

What’s Next?

Rodon has a serious home run problem, and the Yankees can’t afford to keep bleeding games early in the season. With Stroman and Carrasco also off to nightmare starts, there’s pressure mounting fast on both the players and coaching staff.

It’s still April, but the Bronx is already getting restless.
