Fernando Alonso was already looking to vacate his seat after his contract with Aston Martin expires in 2025. He had offers from Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton, but the Spaniard stayed with Aston Martin. But in a recent interview, the question regarding Fernando Alonso’s retirement once again popped up, and the 43-year-old racer didn’t shy away from commenting on it.

“Not at 50, but I don’t know. I wanted to race this year for sure and next year for sure because of the change of regulations, and I wanted to experience the 2026 rules and Honda coming to the team. Then, the surprise was that Adrian [Newey] was joining the team a few months after that.”

Some things were appealing last year when we sat together and negotiated the contract. But after 2026, I don’t know. I will go season by season.”

The record holder for the most races in the F1 circuit (406), has won the F1 drivers title twice – in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Since then, he has been a competition and inspiration to many young emerging racers like Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Carlos Sainz Jr. Alonso has won 32 races with record 74 other podium finishes.

What Did Fernando Alonso Say about Retirement

In the 2025 season, after five races, Fernando Alonso is yet to score a point with the Aston Martin. Yet he is ahead of his partner Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon, and other youngsters, proving he still has control over the wheels. But he knows his limitations against the upcoming pressure and intensity. Talking about his retirement, Alonso said the following,

“If it’s in another position, or I don’t feel fast enough, I will be the first one to raise my hand. I will see how I feel, how motivated I am. Now I am very motivated, but I cannot guarantee that for three or four years and compromise the team.”

“So we said let’s do it until the end of 2026, and then from then on I think I have an incredible relationship with Laurence and with Lance. We can sit and talk honestly between all of us and check what is best for the team.”

This is not the first time Alonso has stepped away from the circuit. In 2018, after 17 years in the sport, Alonso announced his retirement and tried racing opportunities, including sports car racing and the FIA World Endurance Championship. After the three-season gap, he returned to F1, joining Renault (later Alpine). Sadly, this time, though, there might be no turning back from the decision.
