F1 2025 Spanish GP: 18 Racers in Adjusted Grid Line Up At Barcelona Following Lance Stroll’s Withdrawal and Yuki Tsunoda Penalty
The ninth race into the F1 2025 season has all the drama, as expected. Barcelona, hosting its final race since Madrid was confirmed as the next destination for the Spanish GP, will now have 18 racers competing for the title. Aston Martin made an unexpected announcement after the qualifying round 2 as it declared Lance Stroll had withdrawn from the Spanish Grand Prix.
The strange decision came to light after the Canadian driver was seen struggling with injuries. He was feeling pain in his hands and wrists. Stroll took part in every practice session in the build-up to the race in Barcelona. He finished in 14th place after the qualifying rounds in F1’s ninth race.
Aston Martin has ex-McLaren F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne and a Formula 2 champion Felipe Drugovich, available as replacements. Drugovich even drove for Stroll at pre-season testing in 2023 when Stroll was injured during the cycling accident on the build-up to the 2023 season.
Sadly, due to FIA rules, neither racer is eligible to replace Stroll for the Spanish GP 2025. As per article 32.2 a) of the F1 sporting regulations, a driver can be replaced “at any time before the start of the qualifying session”. This leaves the 2025 Spanish GP with 19 racers. Check out the adjusted grid standings below.

Yuki Tsunoda will start from the pit lane in the Spanish Grand Prix after Red Bull changed the rear wing on the back of his RB21. The Japanese driver was due to start from P19. Because the rear wing is of a different specification, his car has now been taken out of the grid.
