One Race Ban for Max Verstappen? Red Bull Racer’s Collision at F1 2025 Spanish GP Put Him at Risk of Heavy Penalty, Watch Video
It’s just nine races in the F1 2025 season, and we already have a clear picture of the champion. Maybe it’s too early to call, but the defending champion is certainly struggling in the 2025 season. In the race, Oscar Piastri extended the lead in the F1 standings with the Spanish GP 2025 win. Max Verstappen, on the other hand, lost his podium finish at the 2025 Spanish GP to Charles Leclerc. He was told by his race engineer to give fourth place to arch-rival Russell. Both racers briefly touched at turn 1.
The Red Bull driver initially moved over to allow Russell through before swerving aggressively into the Mercedes car. The dramatic collision shocked the world, and FI had to intervene. Verstappen was given a 10-second time penalty by the stewards straight after the race. This puts him in the 10th position from the fifth where he originally finished.
Many criticized Verstappen’s act and called for a ban. FIA investigated the incident and had to take further action.
FIA Verdict on ‘Intentional’ Collision by Max Verstappen at 2025 Spanish GP
After further investigation, Max Verstappen was given a further three penalty points on his FIA super license. This puts him on the verge of a race ban since his penalty points total is now 11 points. The Red Bull Racer is just one point away from the one-race ban, and he needs to be careful till June 30 at least. A race ban is triggered if a driver accrues 12 points over 12 months, as seen with Kevin Magnussen last year.
Here are Max Verstappen’s penalty points over the last calendar year
Points deducted | Race | Reason |
2 | Mexico GP | forcing Norris off of the track |
1 | Brazil GP | minimum virtual safety car delta time |
1 | Qatar GP | driving slowly during the cooldown lap |
2 | Abu Dhabi GP | collision with Oscar Piastri |
2 | Austria GP | collision with Lando Norris |
3 | Spanish GP | collision with Russell |
Till June 30, we will have 2 races – the Canadian GP 2025 on June 15 and the Austrian GP on June 30. When asked about the incident after the race, the Dutch star refused to comment. “Does it matter?” he said. “Yeah OK, that’s great. I prefer to speak about the race, not just one single moment.”
