It was midway into the 2024-25 season, and the San Antonio Spurs were in playoff contention with a 23-29 record till Feb 20. But Victor Wembanyama’s injury news shattered their dream to return to the postseason after five years. The Frenchman, diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, was ruled out for the remainder of the season. After Wemby left the action, Spurs went down 10-20 in the next 30 games and finished in the 13th position, one place above last season’s performance.

Providing an update on his injury, Wembanyama said a week ago, “It’s all very controlled and light. Sometimes, I feel like I would like to do more. It’s logical, a medical direction. We’re taking our time. I’m neither late nor early. It’s a process. There are definitely steps to reach that.” And now there is more good news for the Spurs fans.

The return date for Wembanyama was declared as early as August 2025. Still, the 21-year-old star seems to have made a speedy recovery and was spotted playing soccer in Costa Rica. The Centre was in the field playing with some children, showcasing his football skills. After all, he is a French star and knows some tricks from soccer. He even played football at a young age, blocking shots between the sticks.

Victor Wembanyama – Future of NBA?

In recent years, many European stars have taken over the NBA – a league once dominated by American players. With the likes of Dirk Nowitzki, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the power game slowly shifted towards the European stars. Except for Luka Doncic, all three other superstars led their teams to NBA championships and won Final MVP awards.

Victor Wembanyama is another name added to the list. With a towering height of 7 Ft 3 inches, Wembanyama is a menace in the paint. Victor led the league in blocks in both seasons he played in and was even selected in the NBA’s All-Defensive First team.

Other than defence, the Spurs megastar is also lethal on the offensive end. During his rookie season, he averaged 21.4 points and 3.9 assists per game. In merchandise sales, too, Wemby ranks sixth, behind superstars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Jayson Tatum, where the Texas market is smaller compared to others. With his current development and age, there is no doubt that Wembanyama could be the next megastar of the NBA.
