3 Reasons Why Liverpool Will Defend Their Title Next Season

The 2024-25 Premier League season marked another milestone in Liverpool’s history. The club powered to a record-equalling 20th League title, placing it side by side with long-time fierce rival Manchester United.

In Arne Slot’s first season in charge at Anfield, the Dutchman hit the ground running, defying all expectations with a dominant brand of football filled with energy and passion that ensured Liverpool finished as League winners on 84 points, a staggering 10-point gap over second-placed Arsenal.

Football is all about winning and enjoying those monumental moments, so while Liverpool fans celebrated this record-equalling League title with the team in their thousands at Water Street, some already turned their attention to the possibility of ‘League title number 21’

The fans are often involved in the bragging rights, and winning a record-breaking 21 league titles would mean standing alone as the most successful Club in the history of the Premier League.

Preparation for the 2025-26 season started on a horrible note with the devastating passing away of Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva in a car accident, but Liverpool has typically shouldered on with a 3-1 win over Preston in its first pre-season match.

Defending the Premier League title would take a mighty effort from the team, especially for manager Arne Slot, who will be desperate to banish aspersions of being a ‘One Season Wonder’.

1. Renewal of Salah And Van Dijk

The futures of both players became a constant topic of conversation in Liverpool’s quest for the title last season.

The talks surrounding the pair’s future only continued as their performances on the pitch grew.

At 32 and a new manager coming in, there were speculations that this could be Salah’s final season at Anfield, but the Egyptian confounded those thoughts to the dustbin with stellar performances week in week out.

Salah would go on to play all 38 matches in the Premier League, finishing as the highest goal scorer scorer 29 goals and a further 18 assists.

The club needed to break all standard protocol to accommodate Salah, who had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he was the most important player.

Both Salah and Van Dijk were rewarded with new 2 year contracts at the club and by the time it ends in 2027, both will have spent a full 10 years.

Both Mohammed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk will be as important in the new season as they were last season if Liverpool is to defend the title and despite respectively being 32 and 34 years old both have proven based on output and quality they are indeed important to the present and future success of Liverpool.

2. Big Transfer Window

While Liverpool has lost lad, Trent Alexander-Arnold Arnrold much to the displeasure of the fans he he joined Real Madrid as a free agent following the expiration of his contract.

Liverpool has been swift in filling up the void at the right back position with the £29.5m acquisition of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayern Leverkusen, who was a key member of Xabi Alonso’s record-breaking, title-winning team two years ago. Last year the Dutch full back contributed with 5 goals and 6 assist.

The addition of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth not only infuses the much-needed competition for the duo of Tsimikas and Andrew Robertson, but joining at the age of 25 ensures a long-term solution in that position.

With 35 goals and 47 assists in his 4 year stay in the Bundesliga, the signing of German superstar Florian Wirtz stunned most and sent a loud message of Liverpool’s intention to defend the title and push for the Champions League title.

The German attacking midfielder will take his place in the starting 11 serving as a link between attack and midfield in what many believe will blossom with time to the joy of Liverpool faithfuls but the horror for the rest of the Premier League.

The addition of a central attacker to serve as a focal point for the attack will see Liverpool foray into the German Bundesliga once again with the addition of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike in a deal that could likely cost North of £75m.

3. Weak Challenge

Much was and is still expected of Arsenal. Despite consecutive second-place finishes, the Gunners have not been swift in the market. They have lost long Thomas Partey and Jorginho, who have been important components in the midfield, and have been replaced with equally talented Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi, who will take some time to get accustomed to the league.

The Gunners have shockingly added Noni Madueke to its ranks with many desperately searching for how the England International upgrades the attack, Victor Gyokeres looks like he would join and despite posting impressive numbers in the last 2 years in Portugal, it is believed he could struggle in the Premier League as witnessed with players like Darwin Nunez.

Manchester United aim to rebuild an ageing squad this season while Chelsea, despite winning the FIFA Club World Cup look content with another Champions league qualification next season while Manchester City despite spending another £100m pre Club World Cup and it’s early exit have shown to miss Kevin De bryune’s creativity and could yet again struggle this new season season.
