Champions League Logo

The UEFA Champions League for the 2024-25 season comes to an end as Inter Milan lock horns with PSG in a final that could either produce a new winner (PSG) or Inter Milan winning its second UEFA Champions League trophy and fourth European Cup. This season’s UEFA Champions League witnessed the introduction of a league phase format that was accompanied by an increase in the number of participating teams to 36 and, most significantly, an increase in the prize money and earnings for teams involved from the league phase right to the final.

In 2012, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger once referred to Champions League qualification as equivalent to winning a cup and judging by the latest numbers released by UEFA, the Arsenal legend was correct.

Champions League Earnings

According to UEFA, the total amount available for Distribution to teams in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League is €3.317 billion euros of which €2.46 billion would go to teams in the Champions League.

For the 2024-25 Champions League season, the revenue for participating teams will be shared based on 3 pillars:

27.5% will be allocated to equal shares (starting fee) (€670m)

  • 37.5% will be allocated to performance-related fixed amounts (€914m)
  • 35% will be allocated to the newly created value pillar (€853m)

Participación igualitaria

Instead of the customary 32 teams participating in a group of 4, with each team playing each other home and away, the revised Champions League format increased the teams to 36, meaning more matches but also more revenue. Group stage participants in the 2023-24 season received €12 million euros but will now each receive €18.62 million.

Performance-related amounts (€914m)

Performance-related prize money accounts for 37.5% of the overall pot, down proportionately from last season’s 55%. The main reason for this change is the newly created value pillar taking up 35%.

The other 27.5% of the pool is made up of equal shares, starting fee, which is divided between each of the 36 clubs in the league phase. UEFA revealed Champions League phase performance bonuses will be paid for each match, which means a win attracts €2.1m per win and €700k per draw.

In addition, the new league ranking bonus introduced meant each team received an amount based on final league placement at the end of the matches at the league phase. The lowest-ranked team received €275k in shares, while teams that finished between 1st and 8th received an additional ranking bonus of €2,m and clubs between 9th and 16th will receive an additional €1m.

  • Clubs that qualify for the knockout stage can expect to receive the following
    amounts:

− qualification for the knockout round play-offs: €1m per club
− qualification for the round of 16: €11m per club
− qualification for the quarter-finals: €12.5m per club
− qualification for the semi-finals: €15m per club
− qualification for the final: €18.5m per club

While the eventual UCL winners can expect to receive €25 million.

Value pillar for Champions League Pays

€853 million euros will also be shared in this new value pillar as a combination of the former market pool (country market value) and coefficient (individual club coefficients) pillars. The value pillar comprises two parts:

  • European part
  • Non-European part

The amounts allocated will be proportional to the outcome of media rights sales in UEFA markets and markets outside of the governing body’s jurisdiction concluded by July 1, 2024. In an example cited by UEFA in its competition literature, if European markets contributed 75% of the overall media rights then the value pillar would be divided accordingly, with 75% for the European part and 25% for the non-European part.

In the European part, participating countries are ranked based on their domestic broadcasters’ contribution to the overall media revenue. Clubs from those countries are then ranked based on their performances in UEFA competitions over the past five seasons. A separate ranking using the five-year UEFA coefficient of each participating club is also drawn up and the average placement of each club across these two rankings will see them ranked one to 36.
