It’s nearly a quarter of a century now, and the world of football has had many big game tournaments, handing us a number of winners since 2000. There is a striking difference though, with traditional superpowers not being consistent enough on their end. The UEFA Nations League 2025 final between Portugal and Spain served as a reminder of the beauty that lies in international football, as against the much-coveted Club football. The World Cup and various Continental cup competitions have thrown up heavyweight Nations and surprise packages with memories living long in the hearts of fans. Argentina, France had been on the path to dominate the world, but with little success, they were seen as second in line.

Check out teams dominating in the new century and before the 2000 era.

Successful National Football Teams Before 2000

Brazil National Football Team

21st-century international football has blossomed with Nations like Argentina, France, Japan, and Senegal dominating their various confederations and the world stage, but before then, certain football Nations set the pace for others to follow.

Carlo Ancelotti, the first foreign coach of the Selecao referred to the Brazilian national team as the best in the world but recent results say a different story, a nation that once was the reference for others to follow has gradually become the laughing stock struggling to qualify for the world cup while struggling to unseat Argentina as the number one team in the South American region.

Brazil won four of its five World Cup titles between 1958 and 1994 and has only won 1 in the 21st century. A side that boasts of 9 Copa America triumphs has failed to win has won only 3 since the turn of the new century. The only South American competition to them was Argentina and Paraguay.
