All Serie A matches that were supposed to be played on Monday, April 21, 2025, have been postponed after the passing of Pope Francis. The Italian Football League made the decision shortly after the Vatican confirmed that the Pope had died. Italy is now observing a period of national mourning, and football authorities felt it was respectful to pause all games for the day.

The matches that were affected include Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus. These games were scheduled for Easter Monday, a day already important in Italy. The new dates for these matches have not been announced yet, but they will likely be played during midweek before the season ends on May 25.

Who was Pope Francis?

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He became the first Latin American pope and also the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. He was elected in 2013 and was well known around the world for his kindness, humility, and support for the poor and vulnerable.

He also worked to bring changes to the Church and encouraged peace and understanding among people of different backgrounds.

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday morning. He passed away at 7:35 a.m. at his residence in Casa Santa Marta inside the Vatican. Reports say he had been suffering from double pneumonia before his death.

The Serie A table remains tightly contested at the top. Inter Milan and Napoli are currently tied on points, making the title race one of the most exciting in recent years.

If both teams finish the season with the same number of points, the winner will not be decided by goal difference or head-to-head record; instead, a one-off playoff match will be played between the two sides to crown the champion.
