Son Heung-min: A True Spurs’ Legend
Los Angeles FC this week confirmed the signing of Son Heung-Min from Tottenham Hotspur after agreeing to pay $26m which is a record in Major League Soccer, his contract runs until 2027 with an option to extend until June 2029.
While Son has immediately stepped into action for the Black & Gold in a 2-2 draw against the Chicago Fire, for the fans of Tottenham, the reality of Heung-Min Son’s exit will be felt the moment the Premier League kicks off.
Son’s Legacy
After 173 goals, 101 assists, and 454 appearances, Son Heung-Min leaves Tottenham as a legend, which looked an unlikely feat 10 years ago as the South Korean joined from the Bundesliga for £22m, which was a record deal for an Asian player in 2015.

Harry Kane joined Tottenham at 11 and spent most of his time at the club before moving to Bayern Munich in 2023. He paid his tributes to Son, describing their partnership as ‘One of the best’, both players combined directly for 47 goals, Son assisting 23 for Kane, while the Englishman assisted 24 for Son.
Their combination sent shivers down the spines of Premier League defenders under Mauricio Pochettino, who transformed Spurs into title challengers.
Scorer of the first Premier League and Champions League goals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, winner of the 2019/20 FIFA Puskas Award for his wonder goal against Burnley in December 2019, ‘Sonny’ added the Premier League’s Golden Boot to his long list of achievements with 23 goals in 2021/22. Last season, he became the first Asian to score 100 goals in the Premier League.
The 2019, 2-0 Champions League final loss to Liverpool seemed the peak of it all, as the team struggled to hit such lofty heights after that. The team went through several changes, as Pochettino and Harry Kane left shortly after that, but Son stayed back and, despite serious interest from top clubs, signed a 5-year contract extension.
His loyalty to the club was rewarded in 2023 as manager Ange Postecoglou named him Tottenham captain, describing him as a ‘world-class player who has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room’
The tributes expectedly poured in from teammates like Ben Davies, Vicario, and defender, Kevin Danso, who was left surprised as Son welcomed him to the club, speaking in German. He revealed that Son’s Positive attitude and leadership qualities inspire fellow teammates.
A true Spurs’ Legend
To achieve legendary status at a club like Tottenham, one would need longevity and achievement in the form of a major title.
Son won his first title at the club since his arrival 10 years ago as Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.
In what is Son’s last game for Tottenham, he also helped the club win its first major trophy in 17 years, confirming his legendary status at the club. Four days after the Europa League triumph, the team was given a guard of honour by some of the club’s greats like Ossie Ardiles, Pat Jennings, Keith Burkinshaw, Martin Chivers, and Micky Hazard in Spurs’s final Premier League home game against Brighton.
Micky Hazard who was part of the UEFA Cup winning side revealed Sonny shook each of their hands and said ‘Now I’m a legend’, a gesture of humility that touched him greatly because despite the goal contribution of Son and number of years of service, he never thought himself worthy of the tag ‘Legend’ until he won the Europa league and that for sure is the reason fans will never forget Heung Min-Son
