Three Premier League teams are currently locked on 57 points, all battling for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Aston Villa is one of them.

Villa find themselves just outside the top five, solely due to a narrow goal difference, +7, compared to Chelsea’s +18 and Nottingham Forest’s +13.

It’s been a season of near misses for manager Unai Emery, who narrowly missed out on a Champions League semi-final clash with Arsenal, losing 5-4 on aggregate to PSG. While reaching the FA Cup semi-final, where they face Crystal Palace, offers some consolation, nothing compares to the dream of back-to-back Champions League nights at Villa Park.

Unai Emery’s impact since joining the club has been nothing short of remarkable. He took over a team sitting 14th in the table and just three points above the relegation zone and led them to the UEFA Conference League, before guiding them into the Champions League last season.

Champions League football at Villa Park has been memorable this season, especially the famous win over Bayern Munich. Those nights have clearly ignited the hunger for more among both the manager and his players.

How Can Aston Villa Qualify for the Champions League?

On paper, Aston Villa’s route to Champions League qualification looks more difficult than that of their closest rivals, Newcastle, Manchester City, and Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa currently have 57 points from 33 matches, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City and two behind Newcastle. They sit 7th in the Premier League table, two spots outside the top five, meaning Champions League qualification is not entirely in their hands.

Villa will need favourable results from close rivals Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester City to keep their European hopes alive.

To stay in contention, Aston Villa must aim for a maximum of 15 points from their remaining five matches. This would take their final tally to 72 points. While not a guaranteed path to Champions League qualification, it could be enough if any of the three teams ahead of them, City, Chelsea, or Forest, drop points.

The upcoming clash against Manchester City is especially crucial. Villa must win this tie, as a defeat could effectively end Unai Emery’s Champions League ambitions. A win would lift Villa to 60 points, two clear of City with four games to play. However, a loss would widen the gap to four points, giving City a decisive advantage.

In the event of a loss to City, Villa would then rely on both Chelsea (57 points) and Forest (57 points) failing to win more than two of their final five matches for Villa to have a realistic shot at a top-five finish.

Unai Emery has shown he can lead Aston Villa to compete with the best in both the Premier League and the Champions League. However, to continue attracting top-tier talent with experience and quality, securing Champions League football remains essential.
