Luka Doncic Ends Stephen Curry and LeBron James’ 11-Year Dominance Following Move to Los Angeles Lakers
Just as much as Luka Doncic’s move to the LA Lakers turned heads, his impact turned the franchise’s fortune. Or maybe a bit less as the move is still a massive shock. But Doncic’s influence was clearly visible and expected. The team, once in the 11th position around December, are now 3rd in the West. But is that the only huge difference Doncic made at the Western powerhouse? No.
He upped the team’s Jersey sales in the 2024-25 season. The LA Lakers led the league for most jersey sales, and Luka had a major share in it. In fact, Luka Doncic leads the list for top-selling jerseys list, dethroning Stephen Curry, who led the league in the previous season. LeBron James also had a 5-year streak, from the 2018-19 season to the 2022-23 season, leading the jersey sales in the league.
Interestingly, either Curry or LeBron led the league in the category since the 2013-14 season, spanning 11 seasons. Meaning that the Slovenian star broke their dominance, taking over the top position and becoming the first-ever foreign player to do so. Carmelo Anthony was the last star other than LBJ and Curry leading the charts in the 2012-13 season. As for LeBron and Steph this season, they are still in the top 3 with Curry taking the second spot and LeBron following the Warriors’ guard in third.

Is Luka Doncic – Los Angeles Lakers a perfect fit for each other?
Yeah, many will think this is a dumb question to ask after watching the results at the end of the 2024-25 season. But regular-season results get you to the playoffs, it is the postseason performances that win you championships.
Luka reached the NBA finals last season but couldn’t overcome the Celtics’ power. He had Kyrie Irving with him and potent role players around to win the title. Yet he had to settle for second place. Now at the Los Angeles Lakers, the franchise with 17 titles, Doncic has LeBron James and emerging star Austin Reaves.
Will this trio be able to take on the top challengers in the League? Their run after the All-Star break shows positive signs, but in the postseason, with seven gruelling games against top opponents, it’s just different.
Luckily for Doncic, LeBron is a beast in the Playoffs, and at 40, he can still deliver. Reaves, also chasing his first title, has found his groove at the right time, understanding his role perfectly in the team. Defence, if shaken up a bit, could play a vital role. All these could add up to another deep run for Luka, and the Lakers will be pleased with the investment. Yet challenging for the title? Seems a bit far-fetched though.
