How Miami Heat’s Play-In Results Could Impact Their First-Round Draft Picks

Golden State Warriors' Jimmy Butler playing against his former team Miami Heat

The Miami Heat benefited from the Golden State Warriors’ win over the Memphis Grizzlies. How? Even after leaving the Eastern franchise, Jimmy Butler helped the Miami Heat secure a 2025 first-round pick. His 38-point outburst ensured the Warriors’ win over the Grizzlies, and the side advanced to the playoffs.

As per his trade terms, the Miami Heat received the Golden State Warriors’ 2025 first-round picks, which could be between 18 to 20. The order is to be determined by a random drawing among the Warriors, Memphis and Milwaukee – all with a 48-34 record in the 2024-25 regular season.

It’s a good feeling for Miami for now. But now they are in a similar situation. The Miami Heat will take on the Atlanta Hawks for a place in the Eastern bracket of Playoffs. If Erik Spoelstra’s team makes it into the postseason, the franchise will give away its 2025 first-round pick to OKC and its 2027 Top-14 pick to the Charlotte Hornets.

On the flip side, if Miami loses the match, the side will keep its 2025 1st round pick but lose 2026 and 2028 unprotected picks to OKC and Hornets, respectively. This arrangement is part of Terry Rozier’s trade.

Miami Heat Season Dangles Without Jimmy Butler

Love or hate him, Jimmy Butler is one of the most clutch players in NBA history. The Texas-born forward delivered for every franchise he played for. Even though he failed to win a championship, he was instrumental in his team’s progress to the finals. Talking about his most recent organisation – the Miami Heat, with Butler, they reached the playoffs in five consecutive seasons and even made it to the finals twice.

While Butler was not happy with the Miami’s reluctance to sign another star player, he joined the Warriors midway into the 2024-25 season. Already struggling to make it into the top 6, Miami Heat finished with 37–45 record, securing the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference and entering the Play-In Tournament.

Without Butler’s leadership and clutch performances, the team has struggled to find consistency. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have stepped up as primary options, but the absence of a proven closer has been evident.

Regardless of the draft situation explained above, Miami’s side will look to advance to the playoffs. But it is clear that the Heat’s future hinges on their ability to integrate new talent and potentially make strategic moves in the offseason to re-establish themselves as contenders in the Eastern Conference.
