JJ Redick’s Risky Call to Play a Sick Luka Doncic Cost the Lakers Dearly
A 22-point home loss in the opening game of the series against the Memphis Grizzlies was a wake-up call for the high-flying LA Lakers. JJ Redick called for adjustments. LeBron hinted at adjustments and players did the said adjustments in game 2, levelling the series with a nine-point win. And in game 3, they faced another unforeseen issue.
LA’s new superstar and offensive stalwart Luka Doncic suffered from a stomach ailment in the 24 hours leading up to the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 3. Lakers coach JJ Redick mentioned that the star guard was “vomiting all afternoon” before the tipoff.
With a player of Doncic’s status, game-wise and for the team, should have been handled with precautions. A misjudgment could lead to major injury or extended unavailability. But Redick was ready to take the risk as he fielded him against the Wolves.
Coach Redick gave an update on the condition in a press conference. He said, “He hasn’t been feeling well for the last 24 hours so I don’t know how much he slept last night. He didn’t feel well last night, his stomach was bothering him, he was vomiting all afternoon, I’m not sure what happened at halftime, I’ll find out, he was really under the weather.”
The Slovenian star was in pain, he scored just 17 points in 40 minutes with 6-of-16 shooting. That is a massive drop from his 34 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists average in the series.
Was it a wise decision to play Doncic? The Lakers’ lack of depth limits Redick’s options in the backcourt. Though LBJ has played a playmaker role in the past, against the Timberwolves, he is more effective playing a forward’s role. Lakers’ bench’s ineffectiveness to play without either of the stars (Doncic or LBJ, or Reaves) also forced Redick to use the 26-year-old guard as much as possible in the game.

Luka Doncic’s Struggle Continued After Lakers vs Timberwolves Game 3
While Redick did provide some info on the Lakers guard, the media was eager to learn more from Luka himself. Sadly, he was not available after the game and was also absent from the locker room.
“I didn’t think he was going to come out [for the] second half,” Finney-Smith said. “Just because how he sounded, his body language, how he looked. He looked a little pale today. He probably needs to hydrate some more. But like I said, Luka’s tough.” Reaves also voiced his concerns over Luka’s condition and looked sad about missing out on the close match.
Redick himself expressed hope to see Luka back to 100% again. The former Mavs’ star has been a driving force of the Lakers’ recent winning run and the main reason for the 3rd place finish. He will be an important piece for the Lakers against Anthony Edwards and co.
The next match is scheduled on April 27 at Target Center. Luka will have 36 hours’ rest before the game.
