Most Valuable Player – MVP Award, as the name suggests, is given to the athlete who has made the biggest impact throughout the season. It’s an 82-game season (since 1967), and being consistent, dominant and ‘valuable’ for that lengthy period is a commendable accomplishment. While many stars had influenced the NBA regular season with their monstrous performances, there have been few who have won the accolade more than once, cementing their legacy in the league.

While winning the award once is considered as very hard, few players set record for back-to-back accolades. Larry Bird, Wilt chamberlain, and Bill Russell set record with three NBA MVP awards in a row. Similarly, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has record of winning most NBA MVP titles with six. Interestingly he won three MVP awards with Milwaukee Bucks and three with Los Angeles Lakers.

Bill Russell and Michael Jordan won five NBA MVP Awards each, and they hold record for most MVP awards with single franchise. Megastar LeBron James’ four MVP titles are split equally between Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

In the rebranding of the NBA regular Season MVP Awards, the title was named after legend Michael Jordan. Earlier it was named after Prior to 2021, the winner received the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which was named in honor of the first commissioner (1946-1963) of the NBA. The Maurice Podoloff trophy is now given to the team with the best record in the league.
