For the particular accolade, there has been a long history of surprising winners. In 2015, Andre Iguodala was chosen over favourite Stepehen Curry. While Iggy was an incredible player in the series against the Cavs, the decision took many by surprise. Similarly, a season ago, Kawhi Leonard won the MVP award for his defensive work on LBJ and helping the Spurs win the title over the mighty Miami Heat.

Other distant and surprising winners (deserving though) are Tony Parker, Spurs in 2007 with Timmy being the favorite, Joe Dumars for Pistons in 1989 with Isaiah Thomas playing a key role for the ‘Bad Boys’.

A little further in the history will be the 1988 Finals MVP James Worthy, where Magic Johnson was in God mode, making the ‘showtime’ passes for layups and open shots. And his ‘friend’ Larry Bird was also overlooked in 1981, with Cedric Maxwell winning the Finals MVP award.
