Is GTA 6 the Longest Game Ever in Development? Guinness World Records Clears the Air

Rockstar Games has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) will be released on May 26, 2026, pushing the launch nearly a year beyond its previously anticipated fall 2025 date. This delay extends the gap between GTA V (released in 2013) and GTA VI to almost 13 years, leading fans to question whether this marks the longest development period for a video game.

In response to the buzz, Guinness World Records clarified that GTA VI does not hold the record for the longest development time. That title belongs to Duke Nukem Forever, which was officially announced on April 28, 1997, and finally released on June 10, 2011, totaling 14 years and 43 days in development.

While GTA 6 won’t break the official record, many fans argue that it feels like the longest wait ever. GTA 5 launched back in September 2013, and since then, players have been left in limbo, watching remastered versions come and go while waiting for something truly new.

Even if GTA 6 doesn’t take the crown for longest development, it’s easily one of the most anticipated games of all time. And with over a decade of hype behind it, Rockstar has a lot to live up to.

So no, it’s not the longest wait ever. But for GTA fans? It sure feels like it.
