FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick

After winning a domestic treble, FC Barcelona is looking to strengthen its squad, and the key area to address is the goalkeeper. Ter Stegen is back between the sticks, but the team had to search for outside help, Wojciech Szczesny, who came out of retirement and played a vital role in the season. Now his contract extension talks are going on, and even if it fails and the Polish star decides to hang up the gloves again, Barcelona is ready with an option.

The Catalan giants are looking to replace the former Arsenal shot stopper with another Gunner goalkeeper, as per Dario. The report mentions that Barcelona is about to add another as their interest in Argentine World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez intensifies.

Barcelona’s reported move for the Aston Villa number 1 certainly means the club is preparing for life without either of Ter Stegen or Szczesny, who will leave at the end of the season. Martinez, whose prominence on the world stage arrived after winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, has spent 5 seasons at Aston Villa with 195 appearances, 59 clean sheets and 91 wins. He helped Aston Villa end their route to an impressive Champions League run that ended at the quarter-final stage against an Impressive PSG side.

The Argentine appeared to bid farewell to the Villa Park fans as he tearfully waved after the 2-0 win over Tottenham. has been a mainstay at the club since his 20 million pounds move from Arsenal in 2020.

In 2023, the 32-year-old goalkeeper admitted his desire to win the Champions League with Aston Villa, but admitted it would be difficult:

“I would like to do it with Aston Villa, but it will be difficult because the club is still in its growth phase”

But his next destination is not confirmed yet. It is believed that many clubs are chasing the Argentine hero, which will put Barca on alert. Manchester United is one prominent name in the news, with the team also rumoured to be seriously interested in the goalkeeper. Shaky performances from Cameroonian Andre Onana, Man United will hope for a steady and solid shot stopper at Old Trafford. The prospect of joining Manchester United appear dim, though, as Martinez’s priorities lie elsewhere.
