Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha is attracting strong interest from at least seven Premier League clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa leading the chase.

As the 2024–25 season nears its conclusion, top clubs are shifting focus to summer transfers. The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano report that Manchester United have moved ahead of rivals, making Cunha their priority target in a potential £62.5 million deal. Talks over personal terms are said to be progressing.

With hopes of Champions League football via the Europa League and the likely departures of Jadon Sancho and Antony, United are working to reinforce their attacking line for both short and long-term needs.

Why Manchester United Are Pushing for Cunha?

United’s need for attacking depth is clear. Even after Scott McTominay’s departure, the former midfielder has outscored both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined, a worrying sign for United fans.

Cunha’s numbers speak for themselves. Since the start of last season, only 10 players have scored more than his 37 goals. Remarkably, Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford is the only one outside the Premier League’s traditional top 9.

What Makes Cunha Special?

Cunha is known for his dribbling, acceleration, and fierce shooting ability. Clips of him picking up the ball deep and rifling shots past goalkeepers dominate YouTube. Wolves head coach Vítor Pereira described him as:

“A special, unbelievable player with high potential, capable of making a difference in small details.”

Former manager Gary O’Neil acknowledged Cunha’s emotional side, which has led to occasional outbursts – most notably a 4-game ban following a heated incident with Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

Cunha’s Role Under Amorim at Manchester United

There’s a belief that cultural and communication synergy between Cunha and the manager Ruben Amorim will help the Brazilian adapt quickly.

However, pundits remain divided on Cunha’s best role at a top club. His struggles at Atlético Madrid, where he scored just 6 goals in 40 games after a €35 million move, still linger. But now 25, Cunha is more mature and has evolved into a deep-lying forward who creates chances through dribbles, movement, and direct running.

Under Amorim’s likely 3-5-2 system, Cunha would play either as the main striker or a supporting forward, depending on whether Victor Osimhen or Ipswich’s Liam Delap (both linked) also arrive. The Daily Mail reports that one of the two is expected to join for around £40 million.

Cunha could also drop into midfield roles alongside Bruno Fernandes, especially against low-block teams where his close control and shooting could break stubborn defenses. With target men like Zirkzee, Delap, or Osimhen drawing defenders, Cunha’s freedom could be deadly.

It’s clear that Matheus Cunha is no longer the inconsistent 21-year-old who struggled in La Liga. He’s become a leader at Wolves, carrying the pressure of expectations while delivering on the pitch.

If the Manchester United move materializes, he’ll have the chance to show the world that he’s ready to shine on one of football’s biggest stages.
