Real Madrid Ready to Break Their Long-Standing Policy to Retain $315,000-Per-Week Star
Real Madrid’s number one shot-stopper, Thibaut Courtois, is set to continue his outstanding relationship with the Spanish giants, as club president Florentino Perez has approved a two-year contract extension for the Belgian goalkeeper.
According to Relevo, Real Madrid is prepared to break from its usual policy of offering only one-year extensions to players over 30 – a rule previously applied to veterans like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
The club has decided to make an exception for Courtois, who has started 27 games this season, recorded 11 clean sheets, and maintained a 74% save percentage despite playing behind a makeshift defense.
Courtois To Continue Playing for Real Madrid
Negotiations between Real Madrid and Courtois over a new deal have been ongoing for some time, with only minor details remaining. The extension is expected to improve his current $315,000-per-week contract. The club firmly believes that “Courtois is the best goalkeeper around” and expects him to maintain, if not elevate, his elite level in the coming years.

Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has since won 15 titles over seven seasons, establishing himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at the Bernabéu. Now 33 years old, Courtois’ new deal would keep him at the club until 2028, meaning he could remain Real Madrid’s mainstay between the posts until the age of 38.
However, news of Courtois’ new contract casts further doubt over the future of second-choice goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who has recently signed a short-term extension but could seek more playing time elsewhere.
