Virgil Van Dijk

“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head. It was always the plan.” Virgil van Dijk said as he extended his contract with Liverpool FC. The second most influential player was tied down by the team after Mo Salah signed an extension for the Reds.

With seven years, 300+ matches, and seven titles (possibly eight at the end of the current 2024/25 season) the Netherlands defender is ready for more. Fans are excited and interested in the new terms and his salary.

How Much Does Virgil van Dijk Earn?

The 33-year-old defender was handed Liverpool’s captaincy in 2023 by Jurgen Klopp. Even after his departure, Virgil’s status remained the same, as Arne Slot also handed the armband to the Dutch superstar.

As per his recent contract, Virgil had a few months remaining with the Reds and had many offers from the top European clubs. But the star intended to stay in the Northwest region of England and extended his stay for two years.

As the new contract ends at the end of the 2026-27 season, and will be compensated handsomely, continuing his current salary despite his age. So, Virgil van Dijk will earn a salary in the region of £400,000 ($530k) per week. Also, the wages are all guaranteed irrespective of his performance on the field. Liverpool certainly has shown massive faith in their leader. This makes him one of the highest-earning defenders in the world.

Interestingly, there were smooth discussions during the negotiation talks as per the insiders’ report. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes handled the talks with Van Dijk’s representative, Neil Fewings, of the agency ROOF. One more fresh aspect kept in the contract, as per reports, is that there are no break or release clauses in the fresh terms and the centre-back.

Jürgen Klopp, when he took charge of Liverpool, strengthening the back line was his priority, and he made Virgil his prime target. In the 2018-19 winter transfer market, LFC even broke their transfer record to buy him from Southampton for £75 million. A fee at the time looked exaggerated for a centre-back, but Virgil showed on the field why he is worth every penny and quickly settled under Klopp.

With van Dijk taking charge of the defense, Liverpool held the best defensive record in the league during the 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons. His contribution to winning the 2018-19 Champions League and the Premier League title in the next season made him a fan favorite. Liverpool’s side was always in the title discussions with their attack led by Salah and defesce led by van Dijk.

Fans in Liverpool love their captain. In an exclusive interview with Liverpool FC, van Dijk said, “Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.” Highlighting his career right from the start, Liverpool No. 4 said, “It always felt right. I said it from the first day on that it felt right, and I think it showed in the years we have spent together up until now. And obviously more years to come.”

Now that Liverpool has tied up their stars, it will be interesting to watch what would be Arne Slot’s next assignment – to sign a new player or keep the core intact?
