The WNABA Season will tip off on May 17 with multiple teams preparing for the ‘rivalry week’. Four-time champions Seattle Storm will play their first game on the second day of the season against the Phoenix Mercury. While the Storm franchise is getting ready for the new season under coach Noelle Quinn, the side will be without their two key players.

As confirmed by the Franchise, Nika Muhl and Jordan Horston will miss the entire season after suffering injuries while playing for the Turkish club Beşiktaş JK. Muhl got injured in October, while Horston tore her ACL playing for Athletes Unlimited in February.

Muhl, a former UConn star, was drafted as the 14th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, while Horton was the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Though both players had limited playing time with the loaded franchise, they were considered key rotation pieces for the team. After the injury reports, both players’ rookie contracts are kept on hold.

Injury to Nika Muhl Could Affect Seattle Storm

When the Seattle Storm drafted Nika, it was a great opportunity for the young Croatian to showcase her talent on the big stage. She had a great career with UConn as the all-time leading assist-maker. Muhl had 686 assists in her college career and finished her senior year with 200+ assists.

But in her rookie season, she hardly got time to play over 2 minutes in the game with the kind of talent around her. Yet the youngster was ready for the challenge within her team and worked hard for more game time.

“I gotta earn my spot, simple as that. And while I’m earning my spot, I’m having fun and I’m growing and I’m learning — so getting those minutes today is huge. And I’m just waiting for my opportunity and I love waiting for it too.”

Muhl’s improvements in the big league were clearly visible, and she was up for more game time, filling in important minutes for the side. Sadly, the current injury will keep her away from action for a season and also affect her development.
